What is Macular Degeneration?
The macula is located at the center of the retina where most photoreceptor cells gather, crucial for vision.
Macular degeneration occurs when the macula degenerates due to various causes (aging, family history, cardiovascular disease, smoking, etc.),
causing vision impairment and can lead to blindness. Patient numbers are increasing, regular eye exams are essential.

Macular Degeneration Types & Symptoms
Classified as dry (non-exudative) or wet (exudative) based on choroidal neovascularization under the retina.
As new vessels grow, subretinal hemorrhage and fluid cause vision loss, distorted vision, central scotoma.
Wet (Exudative)
Choroidal neovascularization grows under retina, and
severe vision damage occurs from vessel bleeding, exudation.
Can lead to disciform scar, severe hemorrhage, blindness within months to years.
This type progresses very rapidly,
vision often deteriorates within weeks.

Dry (Non-exudative)
Lesions like drusen or retinal pigment epithelium atrophy
occur on retina, accounting for ~90% of cases.
Macular photoreceptor cells gradually atrophy, vision declines.
Can progress to more serious wet form, so
regular monitoring and eye exams are essential
to preserve vision.
Macular Degeneration Symptoms & Treatment
Early stages may have no symptoms, but once symptoms start, progression can be rapid.
Distorted vision, vision loss, central scotoma, reduced color discrimination may occur.
Early detection and consistent management are crucial for macular degeneration.

Point 01
Supplements
Taking supplements containing lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc,
vitamins C·E helps slow progression.

Point 02
Retinal Injection
For wet (neovascular) type, anti-VEGF injection is
most effective to prevent vision loss.
Regular injections help maintain stable vision.

Point 03
Regular Exams
Earlier detection improves treatment outcomes.
Those 50+ or with family history should have exams every 6-12 months.
Visit immediately if vision changes or objects appear distorted.

Macular Degeneration Prevention

Quit Smoking

UV Protection
(Wear Sunglasses)

Prevent & Treat
Cardiovascular Disease

Regular Exercise

Eat Green/Yellow Vegetables & Fruits

Take Antioxidants

Macular degeneration is a leading cause of blindness. Not missing treatment timing is crucial.
Early detection and treatment through regular eye exams are important.
